Go Outside and Play!
Playing outside in nature is important for elementary school–aged children because it supports their physical, emotional, and cognitive development in ways that indoor play cannot. Time spent outdoors encourages movement and exercise, helping kids build strength, coordination, and healthy habits. Nature also stimulates curiosity and creativity, as children explore, ask questions, and use their imaginations in unstructured play. Being outside can reduce stress and improve focus, which enhances learning and emotional well-being. Spending time in nature helps children develop a sense of connection to the environment and fosters responsibility for caring for the world around them.
As educational as TV and iPad can be, there is something truly gratifying for a parent to watch their kids play pretend restaurant with leaves, rocks and pebbles!
